The Coolsculpting Procedure
The idea that cold can selectively affect fat led to the innovative cooling process developed by scientists at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), then die. Over time, your body naturally eliminates them, leaving a more sculpted you. Bulges in treated areas are permanently reduced, meaning your beautifully contoured results will last!
If you’re wondering if Coolsculpting might be right for you, the first step is to book in your complimentary 45 minute consultation with a member of the Coolsculpting Team at Chrysalis Medispa Townsville. This appointment takes place in our private Coolsculpting room. Your consultation will cover the following:
We will explain to you how the Coolsculpting process works
We will cover medical contraindications
We will perform a 360 degree Treatment to Transformation assessment of your body to determine how your Coolsculpting treatment would be performed, focusing on your areas of concern (yes, you will have to be in your knickers but don’t worry, all the team members at Chrysalis have had this done!). Members of the Coolsculpting Team are all qualified and your assessment will be completely private and it will be done in the most sensitive manner possible.
We will ask you to sign treatment consent forms and a photography release form, to be stored on your confidential medical file. Signing these forms in no way indicates that you intend to proceed with your Coolsculpting treatment, it just makes it easier if and when you do decide to book in!
Photographs will be taken in order to complete a full 360 degree Treatment to Transformation assessment. These photographs are stored in your medical file and they provide a baseline for future comparison. They can also help with treatment planning. They will never be used for advertising purposes or shown to other patients without your express written permission.
We will create a tailored quotation for you so you have all the information about your total Coolsculpting investment.
And of course, we will answer any questions you may have!

What does Coolsculpting feel like?
Coolsculpting employs a vacuum cup which draws tissue up into it can make contact with the cooling plates. The vacuum suction is fairly strong but it is not uncomfortable - you get used to it quite quickly. The cooling feels extremely cold when it is first applied but the area goes numb quite quickly. The majority of the cycle is painless. Most patients watch movies, work on their laptops, play on their phones or read magazines. Discomfort is not an issue for the majority of patients. When the cycle is complete, a manual massage is administered to break up crystallization in the treated area. There can be some discomfort associated with this but it is over very quickly.
How long does it take to see results?
Some patients see results as early as four weeks but best results are experienced twelve to sixteen weeks (3-4 months) after your Coolsculpting treatment.
Am I a good candidate for Coolsculpting?
The best candidates for Coolsculpting are those who are at a healthy body weight and are reasonably satisfied with their body, but still have distinct bulges or pockets of fat that they find difficult to remove with diet and exercise. Coolsculpting is not a weight loss treatment and as such, it is not suitable for obese patients or those who need to lose substantial amounts of weight. Everyone is different however, so the best thing to do if you’re not sure is to book in a complimentary consultation!
Are there any side effects?
Coolsculpting is a clinical procedure and as such, there is always the risk of side effects. However, we are happy to say that these are extremely rare and, when they do occur, most side effects are mild and disappear quite quickly.
What happens if I put on weight after I’ve been treated?
The effects of Coolsculpting are permanent. When an area is treated, approximately 30% of the fat cells in that area will be destroyed and permanently removed by the body’s waste removal systems. Therefore, even if you put on weight after your Coolsculpting treatment, the body will not store as much fat in that area because there are no longer as many fat cells capable of storing fat.
How long will my treatment take? Will I be bored?
One cycle - which is one treatment “zone” - takes 60 minutes. So, for example, if you were having your inner thighs treated, that would be two cycles, one on each side. So you’d be in clinic for a little over two hours. To take advantage of that time, many patients bring their files and laptops in and use that time to work. Many patients also bring a book or some magazines for some much-needed downtime. But don’t worry, you’ll be well taken care of! We have a selection of magazines, an iPad with Netflix especially for Coolsculpting patients, and we also have a Coolsculpting Beverage menu, where you can choose from barista coffees, teas, sparkling mineral water, orange juice and snacks. When you are having four or more cycles in one day, we will also provide lunch!
How much does Coolsculpting cost?
Treatments start at $850 per cycle, however package discounts do apply when multiple cycles are booked.
